What better way to start Spring than with a clean break
(up)! I know I make it sound so easy
breezy, but we all know it’s anything but easy.
Hopefully my story will inspire some of you to just…LET IT GO! I knew
from the moment I looked in the mirror, that all the answers to my questions
were clearly reflected in the mirror. It had been over for the last eight
months, but I couldn’t let go, I had worked too hard, spent too much money “investing”
in a dead end relationship, and most of all it was a definitive representation
of my inability to take care of something that I loved. I know some of you are
thinking, this girl is so dramatic. The truth is I am! I constantly reassured
myself that it would get better, and that all I had to do was try harder. Big
mistake,
the harder I tried the more frayed and damaged this situation became.
Again, the answer was always present. I just took detour after detour trying to
avoid the inevitable. Isn’t it funny how we pray for answers, spend countless
hours surfing the web for solutions from others who have experienced the same
thing, and depending on the severity of one’s desperation an informal focus
group of friends; when we have the answer. It’s just not the answer or outcome
that we wanted, so in order to avoid a head on collision with the truth, taking
the scenic route is a more soothing approach for the mind. I think the last
strand for me was the fact that my hair was starting to shed uncontrollably. I
went to the beauty supply store and bought the highest quality hair sheers and
that very night I ended my tumultuous, dead end relationship with my hair.... I
knew there was one piece of this saga I forgot to mention the relationship was
with my hair!
I don’t want you to
experience the trauma I endured. I’m going to share some tips that I incorporate
into my current hair regimen to maintain healthy relationship with my hair! lol
1.)
My number one rule is don’t aim to have a long
hair. Make having healthy hair your goal, because that will be how you get the
most length retention. If you take care of your hair by deep conditioning,
protective styling, finger detangling, and regular trims, and moisturizing then
length retention will flow effortlessly.
2.)
See(k) and destroy! DO NOT allow split ends and
dead ends take over your hair. You can do all the DC and use all the products
out there to “mend” split ends, but it’s a temporary fix. Those products give
you the illusion of healthy hair, but why settle for healthy “looking” hair,
when you could have hair that is healthy! There is no time frame on when you should trim
your hair, trim your hair when you “feel” it is time.
3.)
Feel your hair up! Yes that’s what I said. If
you look at your hair and it appears to look okay, don’t be fooled. Starting at
the roots of your hair, grab a small section of hair, and run fingers down the
entire length of it until you reach the ends. If you get to the ends and the
texture of your ends are severely rough, or they feel coarser than the hair
above its time to trim. Let it go, because it will only get worse. This may be
different from texture to texture, if you have straight hair, you may want to
do this after you have blow fried your hair, and before you use a flat iron to
smooth the hair.
4.)
Shedding- Oh how I hate thee! It is said that
the average human sheds 50 -100 hairs a day, and there’s nothing to combat
that. It perfectly healthy and necessary. When you see an excessive amount of
hair shedding, your immediate reaction may be panic, at least mine was. Before
you go over the edge, investigate! The answer can often be quite simple, have
you changed your products recently, are you stressed, have you been drinking
water, did you make a change in your hair regimen, are you taking medicine/vitamins,
are you doing protein and DC treatments. For me the cause of my shedding was
that I needed a trim, I wasn’t drinking enough water, and I changed my regimen.
I went almost 10 months without trimming my ends, because I didn’t want to let
go of my length. In the end that’s exactly what happened. If your goal is
healthy hair then, the reward will always be length retention.
5.)
Label Snob, who me? Let me explain, I don’t mean
label in the pertinent sense as it relates to its generalized use. I have natural hair, but others may LABEL me
differently. Some naturalist say that if
you are truly natural you dont get relaxers, color your hair, or use products
that aren’t natural and organic ; to that I say:
Don’t allow labels to define how you care
for your hair. If using shampoo works for you then do it, if you like silicone
products then use them and if you want to color your hair then do it. You get
my point, it’s your hair and no label should define how you take of your hair.
I hope that this make help some of you let
go of that “dead end” relationship you have been in. lol
